MUNICH LOVES ME!!! (Dasha too)

Our stroke of good luck continued in Munich. It was Munich's 850th birthday (TAKE THAT QUEBEC!) which was explained as "no big deal for a european city" by the tourist brochure! Their motto was great: they had taken the self centered I *heart* New York and made it Munchen *hearts* You!

Our train from Milan was late through Italy but the Germans made up some time. We took the S-Bahn to our hotel in the suburbs and napped before going into town to try to find some cheap food. Cheap food could not be found but we discovered the joys of expensive german food: big portions.

The next day we took a day trip to Dachau Camp set up by the Nazi's as a work camp. It was very sad trip and partially in the rain to add to the mood. The site was free and the explanations in the main administration house took us until closing time to RUSH through. We didnt even have time to see the furnaces on the far side of the camp, but that will be for next time. It was very depressing so we decided to walk to the S-bahn and have lunch by the river. We went back into town to try to catch theatre tickets but there were none left. So instead we watched the glockenspiel shown which was really lame but free. (That night the city had a major free show but we only found out about it after going home and also it poured all night)

The next day we went to salzburg (see next post).

The following day we slept in really late and then went out to catch a little bit of the city wide celebrations. The streets were packed with traditionally dress people and traditional beverages (Beer!). It was really great but the highlight of that evenings was our meal. A 100% authentic Bavarian meal with meats galore and sauerkraut! We were stuff but it was soooo good! I had a reputed best beer in the world which was a super dark wheat beer that didnt let a ray of light through (It may actually hold that title). Dasha had a regular local beer with raspberry sauce; it made for a really girly and pretty good beer.

On our last day we decided to take the late train to Wien so that we could go nuts with the locals for the city's bday. Food was abundant corn, sausages you name it. Beer was just everywhere. Bands played wherever they didnt interupt another. The whole ring road had booths for everything from Blind Basketball to Waterbottle towers to Manual Ferris Wheels. The central intersection was converted into a Football field. We had so much fun but only caught one quarter of the ring road before it was time to go to the train station.

One thing to note, it was here that our Sudoku madess began, they are free in the metro newspapers and occupy lots of train time.

We have to come back here too... We didnt even do Neuswanstein....

Did you know Munich was celebrating when you booked, or did you just luck out? No wonder you had trouble finding accommodation... Sounds like quite the party! Looking forward to the photos.
